Vice Admiral Amjad Khan Niazi has been named as the new Chief of Naval Staff (CNS) following the departure of Admiral Zafar Mahmood Abbasi. He retires on October 6.
He will also be promoted to the rank of Admiral before he takes charge as the CNS in a Change of Command ceremony scheduled for October 7 at PNS Zafar, Islamabad.
Official notification is awaited in this regard. However, the Special Assistant to Prime Minister (SAPM) on Political Communications, Dr. Shahbaz Gill, has confirmed the appointment of Admiral Niazi as Admiral Abbasi’s successor.
Niazi was commissioned in the Operations Branch of Pakistan Navy in 1985 and won the coveted Sword of Honour.
Niazi is a graduate of Army Command and Staff College, Quetta, and National Defence University, Islamabad. He holds Masters Degree in Underwater Acoustics from Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, China.
During his illustrious career, he has served on various command and staff posts. His command appointments include Pakistan Fleet Commander, Commanding Officer of PNS Badr and PNS Tariq, 18th Destroyer Squadron Commander, Commandant PNS Bahadur, and Commandant Pakistan Navy War College/ Commander Central Punjab, Lahore.
His previous staff appointments include principal secretary to the chief of the naval staff, head of F-22P Mission China, Deputy Chief of Naval Staff (training and evaluation), and Director General of Naval Intelligence.
He has also conferred with the Hilal-i-Imtiaz (Military) and Sitara-i-Basalat by the government of Pakistan, and the French Medal Chevalier (Knight) by the government of France.
